Barcelona does not hide its light. It announces it every morning, spills it across balconies, bounces it off white walls until the city feels overexposed. For a painter, this abundance could seem like a gift. But I have found that extreme light does not reveal. It erases. It burns away the subtle tones, the quiet grays, the colors that only exist in hesitation. And so, in a city of relentless clarity, I have learned to paint what the light refuses to show.
The Architecture of Shadow
Barcelona’s architecture — Gaudí’s curves, the Eixample’s grids, the narrow Gothic Quarter streets — creates shadows that move like clocks. A wall that is blinding at noon becomes a soft violet at five. These transitions are where the real painting happens. Not in the sun, but in the moment the sun withdraws. Work concerned with the subconscious was born in these margins. It asks what remains when visibility is no longer guaranteed.
Absence as a Material
In a studio flooded with southern light, absence becomes a physical substance. You learn to see the space between objects. The pause between gestures. The color that is not there but that the eye invents to rest. I do not paint Barcelona’s light. I paint the exhaustion that follows it. The body’s memory of brightness when the room goes dark.
The Studio as Refuge
My studio is in a part of the city where the light is filtered through old glass and laundry lines. It is not dramatic. It is patient. This patience has taught me that a painting does not need to shout to be seen. It needs to hold its ground in silence. A work can feel different in the studio than it does in a gallery. That is because the studio is where the work is still listening. The gallery is where it begins to speak.
