This painting is about the act of waiting for a saviour, and the system that produces that expectation.
The system tells us that we are entirely responsible for our own lives, while at the same time teaching us to wait to be chosen, noticed, or validated by others. We wait for a partner, an employer, an institution, the right connection, or someone else to change what is not working in our lives.
Over time, believing that the solution will come from elsewhere can become a way of postponing responsibility. Yet this is not simply an individual behaviour; it is also the result of a system in which access to security, opportunity, and belonging often depends on being chosen by others.
When needs become a game, people can unknowingly become resources for one another. In the pursuit of love, security, status, power, visibility, or opportunity, relationships can quietly become instrumental.
This is where victimhood and opportunism begin to overlap. A person may see themselves as a victim of their circumstances while seeing someone else as a way out of them; they may begin to imagine reaching the life, position, or power that person represents. The individual becomes important not so much for who they are, but for the escape they might provide.
The central figure waits. Apparently passive, yet the people, objects, and possibilities around them gradually become a landscape of potential ways out.
